Welcome seniors of Baldwin, Escambia, and Mobile Counties!

The Commission's Area Agency on Aging is designated by the Alabama Department of Senior Services as the official organization to advocate, plan, evaluate, coordinate, and where feasible, contract for delivery of existing or expanded services to the elderly throughout the South Alabama Region. The organizational objectives of the Area Agency on Aging are:

  1. To investigate the needs of the elderly and the resources presently available to meet those needs.
  2. To plan expansion and/or new service programs for the elderly.
  3. To disseminate information (in the form of training, education programs, seminars, etc.) concerning present and potential service programs for the elderly, and to serve as the central information and referral source for older adults, family members and agencies.
  4. To coordinate with existing service organizations, senior citizen groups and governmental agencies for the development of a comprehensive and cooperative service delivery system.
  5. To advocate on behalf of the elderly and seek to enhance their independence within our society through legislation and untapped funding sources.
  6. To contract for the delivery of expanded social services to the elderly with existing service organizations throughout the community. Priority services that are contracted include:
    • Support of 27 SAIL Centers (Senior Activities for Independent Living) that include congregate and home-delivered meals.
    • Access services to include transportation; information/referral; escort; and outreach.
    • In-home services for homebound older adults.
    • Legal counseling services and insurance counseling services.
    • Ombudsman services that act on behalf of residents of long-term care facilities (nursing homes, assisted living homes).
    • Support of senior citizen multi-purpose centers.
  7. To evaluate the effectiveness of the service delivery system and seek to ensure that the services proposed and being implemented are significantly providing opportunities for independent living to the recipients.
